Future of Valve VR, Next Gen HP Headset & Huge New Releases! – VRecap

Welcome to another swift roundup of the week’s top VR stories, releases and more! You can probably already guess the direction this episode is going to take, but we’ve got more than just Half-Life: Alyx to talk about.

First, not only did Half-Life: Alyx release, but we got the low-down on the future of VR at Valve. Jamie spoke to Greg Coomer from Valve and questioned whether or not Gabe Newell’s claims of Valve having three VR titles in development from 2017 were still true. Spoiler: they’re not. Well, not for now, anyway.

Alongside all the Alyx excitement, HP decided to drop pretty big news at the same time Valve’s title released – there’s another HP Reverb coming and it’s going to have next gen specs! What are those specs, you ask? Well… We don’t know yet, but they shared this pretty cool teaser trailer! Read more from our hardware expert, Heaney, who can fill in more gaps.

The number of releases this week has been unprecedented – yes, other VR games exist this week (and some are pretty darn good, too!). Time for a roll call! We’ve got: Paper Beast, The Room VR: A Dark Matter, Down The Rabbit Hole, Tilt Brush on PSVR, A-Tech Cybernetic VR also on PSVR, and B-Team on Quest.

We don’t have a giveaway for you this week, but make sure to tune in next Friday to see what’s up for grabs.

As for other news this week, here are other stories which didn’t quite make it into the VRecap:

Enjoy the glorious, non-judgemental freedom self isolation has given you, and make sure to follow us on Twitter and Facebook for the latest in VR. Have a great weekend!

Ironlights Dated for April, Features Cross-play & Cross-buy

Last month virtual reality (VR) indie developer E McNeill achieved Kickstarter success for his duelling combat title Ironlights.  Today, the developer has announced the multiplatform launch date will be taking place next month whilst confirming several key features.

Ironlights

The success of the crowd-funding campaign not only meant useful cash to finish and polish Ironlights but also the ability to build a community to test the title before launch. “I want to give a huge thanks to everyone who backed the Kickstarter, and especially to those who’ve been playing the beta over the past several weeks. Their feedback, suggestions, and bug reports have done a lot to help us get Ironlights to the finish line,” said McNeill in a blog posting.

Ironlights will support a range of headsets including Oculus Quest, Oculus Rift, HTC Vive and Valve Index at launch. McNeill has confirmed that cross-buy will be enabled between Oculus Quest and Rift on the Oculus Store, whilst all the versions support cross-play multiplayer.

The developer isn’t stopping there either. He’s already released a roadmap for future updates:

Coming soon

  • New cosmetic options (armors, materials, etc.)
  • Gameplay tweaks and balance adjustments
  • Multiplayer skill tracking and handicapping system
  • New single-player opponents and levels
  • Cosmetic unlock system (spend coins to unlock new cosmetic options)
  • Public spectator client (a 2D app for spectating multiplayer games)
  • Tips page (a section in the menu for explaining advanced mechanics)

Long-term plans

  • New classes and weapons
  • Improved hit reactions and damage VFX
  • Revamped sound effects
  • Shield shattering (instead of shields shrinking from damage)
  • Revamped Campaign mode, including more difficulty options
  • Training mode

Ironlights

Ironlights is a PvP fighter designed around fluid combat. Players are able to use a variety of physics-based weapons to parry, block, and strike down their opponent. Its unique combat system means that weapons shatter on impact, with all the action taking place in slow-motion. While the core gameplay mode is the PvP Ironlights does feature a single-player mode where players can fight to the top of the league.

E McNeill will launch Ironlights across all platforms (SteamOculus Quest, and Oculus Rift) on 9th April 2020. For further updates on the videogame, keep reading VRFocus.

Campaign DLC Now Available For Arizona Sunshine On Oculus Quest

The ‘Dead Man’ campaign DLC is now available for the Oculus Quest. This campaign DLC was previously released for PC VR before the game was available for Quest,  and is now available on Facebook’s standalone VR headset as part of Vertigo Games’ post-Quest launch content roadmap.

Arizona Sunshine launched on the Oculus Quest in December last year, and has since been receiving the same post-launch DLC as the PC VR version month-by-month. Oculus Quest players previously received the free 2 Handed Weapons update in December, the free Old Mine update in January and then the free Undead Valley update last month.

As of today, the Dead Man campaign DLC for Arizona Sunshine is available on Oculus Quest. However, unlike the content updates for the Quest so far, the Dead Man DLC is the first piece of paid content, available for $2.49.

This is the first of piece of paid DLC for Arizona Sunshine on the Quest, and will be followed by the next piece of campaign DLC next month, The Damned, also available for $2.49.

The Dead Man DLC is a prequel to the main campaign. The Oculus blog post states that the DLC will see players “infiltrate the missile base in this adventure as a new protagonist, Corporal John Dockson, and complete your mission to take out the zombie threat.”

The DLC also includes 3 new weapons – an automatic submachine gun, a two-handed shotgun, and a tactical handgun.

Importantly as well, while the base game of Arizona Sunshine on Quest is not cross-buy with the Rift release, this paid DLC is. So, if you previously bought the Dead Man DLC for Oculus Rift, it will be available for Oculus Quest for free via cross-buy.

Will you be jumping into the Dead Man campaign on Quest? Let us know in the comments.

Review: The Room VR: A Dark Matter

In 2012 Fireproof Games launched the first in an award-winning series of puzzle titles for mobile devices called The Room. Offering a fantastical storyline involving magic and a Victorian-era setting, the franchise has gained a legion of fans thanks to the elaborate brainteasers the studio has thought up. Now that gameplay has been transferred into virtual reality (VR), specifically catering to VR mechanics for what is set to be the most immersive entry in the series, The Room VR: A Dark Matter.

The Room VR: A Dark MatterVR is littered with imaginative puzzle titles which range from overwhelmingly difficult to charming and delightful. From bouncing puzzler Glyph’s precision and timing to the recently released Down the Rabbit Hole, there’s no shortage in this genre so to stand out the entire package needs to be special.

Thanks to its pedigree The Room VR: A Dark Matter already benefits but it doesn’t rest on its laurels. It takes what’s best about the franchise and expands into VR with comfortable hands-on gameplay and puzzles that are inventive yet not too overly complicated that you should be stuck for any serious length of time.

The storyline is an important factor in The Room VR: A Dark Matter as it intertwines the puzzles together, making progression feel relevant whilst building a desire to find out what is actually going on. Set in 1908, you play a detective assigned to a missing person case; an esteemed Egyptologist at the British Institute of Archaeology in London has vanished into thin air. As it turns out nothing is what it seems, making for an intriguing plotline.

The Room VR: A Dark MatterSo you start off in a detective’s office with a pleasant view of early 20th century London and this is the smallest area you’re presented with. There are four main locations in The Room VR: A Dark Matter which doesn’t sound like a lot but each one is bigger than the last and more sophisticated, so you do get a good 5+ hours of gameplay. This will also depend on how well acquainted you are with the previous titles, past experience does help with familiar puzzles popping up.

One aspect that will probably divide players is exploration and movement. The Room VR: A Dark Matter goes for node-based teleportation so you don’t have any freedom to wander around the areas. This does make the gameplay feel somewhat restrained considering how much the VR industry has progressed but it does offer several benefits. The first is primarily comfort, so most players shouldn’t have any issue diving straight in.

The other has to do with difficulty and puzzle layout. If you’re given full freedom to wander around frustration can set when you’ve missed something, especially if it’s plainly obvious. With a set number of locations you can move to there’s no worry about blindly overlooking a crucial clue, all you have to do is pay attention to the local vicinity. That doesn’t mean to say The Room VR: A Dark Matter makes things easy, there are some difficult brainteasers to solve which require travelling between several areas.

The Room VR: A Dark MatterA core part of any The Room videogame was the special piece of glass that would allow you to see the unseen. This is where a big part of the magical element comes into play, uncovering hidden symbols and writing on the walls. Its location within the inventory is reminiscent of the other titles but comes off as rather clunky in VR, having to switch back and forth, especially as it turns off when you teleport. Adding the switch to one of the unused controller buttons or physical interaction with the side of your head could’ve been a little more immersive.

If you’re a fan of the franchise then you won’t be disappointed with The Room VR: A Dark Matter as Fireproof Games continues to improve upon the gameplay. For those that have never played The Room before, then its standalone storyline won’t make you feel like you’ve missed out. Varied environments filled with detail, rich lore and polished puzzles prove that The Room VR: A Dark Matter is an essential VR puzzler for all fans of the genre.

Google’s Tilt Brush Surprise Launches On PSVR… In Japan

Surprise! Google’s popular Tilt Brush VR creation platform is finally available on PSVR. Well, at least in Japan it is.

Trailers and tweets from PlayStation’s Japanese arm confirm that the app is now out on Sony’s headset in the region. We’ve asked Sony if we’ll be getting a similar surprise launch in the US and EU today, so keep your eyes peeled. The game costs 2,189 yen, which works out to about $20.

Tilt Brush is the original VR painting app, allowing players to paint with a virtual brush in a 3D space. The experience was originally launched on the HTC Vive when it released four years ago now (!). It’s since grown a huge following, arriving on other headsets and adding crucial new features. It’s become a staple app for artists to innovate; we’ve seen countless incredible works over the years from a selection of talented artists.

Interestingly the app is published by Sony itself, not Google. In fact, the PlayStation Blog post announcing the release only mentions Google via trademark. It definitely seems like Sony had a heavy hand on getting this onto its headset, then. Still, at the very least we hope this means we might see more Google apps on PSVR. Google Earth is just as essential an experience that’s never made it over to Sony’s headset.

In its absence, Tilt Brush has been imitated in various forms on PSVR. Honestly we’d given up hope that it would ever arrive on the platform. Ironically it now arrives on the cusp of PSVR support for Dreams, a much more robust creation app that not only lets players make their own 3D art but also animate it and then use it in games all made within the same app.

Will you be picking up Tilt Brush on PSVR? Let us know in the comments below!

A New Leak May Reveal Information About The First Game For Apple’s Rumored VR/AR Device

A new report shows a customized HTC Vive Focus controller and “crosswalk bowling game”.

Back in 2018, rumors began circulating that Apple was in development of a hybrid VR/AR headset. This past November a discussion lead by Apple VP Mike Rockwell during an internal group presentation suggested a potential 2022 release date for the mysterious device.

Now it appears as though Macrumors has uncovered additional information in a leaked build of iOS 14 that’s been making the rounds online. Included in the report is a photo taken from the build showing off what appears to be a customized HTC Vive Focus controller. This would make sense considering the company has already confirmed it’s been utilizing HTC technology during its tests.

In addition to this single motion controller, the report also details a “crosswalk bowling game”. According to Macrumors, the experience is meant to be played while waiting to cross the street. Users use the customized Focus controller to throw a virtual bowling ball at a set of virtual pins situated at the other end of a crosswalk. Supposedly the app can only be accessed by an Apple engineer near an Apple office known as “Mathilda 3” at 555 N Mathilda Ave in Sunnyvale, California.

In addition to a combination VR and AR headset, Apple is reportedly working on a pair of dedicated AR glasses that will compete directly against Facebook’s own AR headset, also confirmed to be in development.
