Ultra-wide FOV Headset StarVR One Priced at $3,200, Selling to Enterprise Only

StarVR One, the ultra-wide field of view (FOV) VR headset, has traveled a long and winding path on its way to launch since it was first announced in late 2018 that developers and enterprise would be able to apply for hardware. Now the Taipei-based company has detailed price and availability in the US, Europe and Asia.

Update (May 4th, 2020): StarVR has detailed its official pricing, stating that their wide FOV headset is now available for purchase by enterprise customers for $3,200 or €2,800, which includes shipping, but excludes local taxes. The news was first reported by MRTV’s Sebastian Ang.

StarVR tells MRTV that since the headset is a b2b product, that price may skew lower based on order quantity. The company further confirmed that although StarVR One is indeed supported through OpenVR, however the number of viewports needed requires software-side changes for the sake of compatibility.

Furthermore, StarVR tells Ang that it’s headset is strictly meant for qualified enterprise customers, and interested parties will have to go through a selection process first (i.e. no prosumers). The original article follows below.

Original Article (April 9th, 2020): StarVR is now available in Japan and Taiwan through a handful of companies, including ELSA Japan Inc., Cybenet Systems, Access Co, and ASK Corporation in Japan, and Ability International Tenancy Co, Otsuka Information Technology Corp. and Axis3D Technology Co. in Taiwan. Availability in mainland China is marked as “coming soon”.

The news was first reported by Mixed Reality TV’s Sebastian Ang.

Pricing is still unclear, although we wouldn’t expect it to stray too far from its originally quoted $3,200 price tag when it was first offered through the developer program in November 2018 (see update). StarVR’s developer program was however indefinitely put on hold a short time afterwards, which was a direct result of its delisting from the Taipei stock exchange and subsequent reorganization from a public to private entity.

StarVR One, once the result of a partnership between Acer and game developers Starbreeze, is still likely well outside of the reach of consumers, appealing instead to businesses such as VR arcade operators, design firms, and other industrial use cases.

Just the same, when we tried it last back in September 2018 Road to VR Execute Editor Ben Lang was pretty impressed with what he saw:

“From my hands-on time with the headset, StarVR has done a great job of achieving optical comfort. The field of view feels immensely wide, reaching to the ends of your horizontal peripheral vision, without introducing eye-strain or edge distortions that are overtly distracting. The projection of the virtual world feels correct in a way that leaves the user free to soak in the added immersion that comes with such a wide field of view. Getting all of this right is key to Presence—that uniquely deep state of immersion,” said Lang.

The headset’s claim to fame invariably rests on its absolutely massive 210 × 130 degree FOV, dual custom AMOLED displays boasting 1,830 × 1,464 per lens resolution (total of 16 million sub-pixels), and eye-tracking from Swedish firm Tobii.

Oculus Exclusive ‘Star Wars Vader Immortal’ Coming to PSVR This Summer

Admit it. You’ve been wanting to try out the Oculus exclusive series Star Wars Vader Immortal since it first came to Rift and Quest last year. Now ILMxLAB says it’s preparing to bring the award-winning narrative adventure series to PSVR.

Vader Immortal is coming to PSVR this summer, ILMxLAB Creative Executive Producer Mark S. Miller announced in a PS blog post. Unlike its trilogy-style, piecemeal roll-out on Rift and Quest, the PSVR version is coming out in a single package, Miller says.

Although it’s not a full-blown Star Wars VR game, leaning more towards the ‘cinematic experience’ spectrum, Vader Immortal offers some of the most immersive environments, character design, story, and atmosphere we’ve ever seen in VR. Yes, the story mode part of the game is entirely scripted, and doesn’t offer much in the way of a challenge to complete when it does throw action your way, but it’s still an absolute blast to wield a lightsaber and get face-to-face with the tall dark and not-so-handsome Sith lord himself.

And once you’re done with the story, you can hone your Jedi skills in one of three ‘lightsaber dojos’, which present some of the best, most challenging wave-based combat out there. You might think that’s not saying much, but it actually turned out to be a highlight of the adventure on our first go around on Quest.

In fact, we liked the first episode so much we gave it Road to VR’s 2019 Oculus Quest Game of the Year.

Try To Defend In ‘Project RTD: Random Tower Defense VR’

It’s time to set up your defenses as Project RTD: Random Tower Defense is making its way to the virtual world.

Created by Jamong, the tower defense game was developed specifically for VR where you must stop the siege of enemy units who are trying to make it to the end.

There will be 30 towers to pick and choose from with 5 different grades. You’ll have to utilize their different abilities and make a perfect combination in order to stop the enemy units.

Project RTD: Random Tower Defense will feature 10 different maps. 5 of them will be ancient historical sites with the remaining 5 being in space.

There will be a “Challenge Mode” where missions and invading monsters are designed differently in each stage which will shift your strategies.

In addition, there will be a high score board with various bosses to get through. Project RTD: Random Tower Defense is set to release on the HTC Vive and Oculus Rift at a later date down the road.

Will this be similar or different to other tower defense games?

Audio Trip Arrives On Oculus Quest This Week Alongside A Custom Level Creator

Burn up those calories with a brand new song and additional customizable features.

Kinemotik Studios had an awesome 2019 with the launch of their rhythmic dance VR hit, Audio Trip. Choreographed by a professional dancer, Audio Trip launches you into this psychedelic dance arena packed with fans cheering you on as you bust out killer dance moves to music from Lady Gaga, Skrillex, Zedd, and Deadmau5.

Not only is it a total blast to play, but it actually burns more calories than having sex!

Since its release, Audio Trip fans have been demanding a standalone release that doesn’t require an expensive PC in order to play. Well good news friends — your day has finally come! The booty-shaking, cardio-boosting, dance game finally arrives on Oculus Quest later this week!

On top of that, the Quest version of Audio Trip will also include a new track entitled “Golden Pineapple” by Austin, TX-based producer, Tolan.

For those who’ve never played Audio Trip, the rhythm-based VR game has you moving your entire body to the beat of a thumping soundtrack. Each track has you extending your arms towards glowing gems and ribbons of light, smashing on virtual drums, and avoiding incoming obstacles in order to rack up big points on the global leaderboard.

You’re playing a game while simultaneously receiving a killer workout.

“Audio Trip is the closest thing to having a professional choreographer in the room with you; what starts out as touching your [controls] to gems will soon have you realize you are actually dancing to the music,” said XR industry content creator and Audio Trip fan, Njna Grimsdottir, in an official press release. Grimsdottir adds, “I use dancing as therapy for stress and I’m also transgendered so it allows me to be in the guise of my true self while I’m in the process of transitioning in real life.”

The Quest version will also include a new custom choreography tool that will let you build your own dance routines using the pre-loaded songs in the game. Building out a new choreographed Audio Trip experience slightly resembles the process of recording music, only instead of looking at audio tracks on a 2D screen, you’re actually seeing the beats in a 3D setting. It looks a little complicated, but give it a little practice and before you know it you’ll be building awesome custom levels.

Once you’ve mastered level creation, you can take that knowledge and enter Kinemotik Studios and Andromeda Entertainment’s Choreography Contest. The contest begins May 7th at 10am PST, the same day as the games’ Oculus Quest release. To enter, all you have to do is create your own version of Golden Pineapple and then submit a video of you or a friend playing the level on the Audio Trip Discord Channel. The top submission will receive a prize of $1,000; second place gets $500, and the third place entry receives $250.

Zumba fanatic Katharine Baarsma told VRScout, “I love playing Audio Trip, especially on those days when I can’t make it to my Zumba class,” she continues, “I can play the game for hours and I always get an awesome workout.” When I asked her if she’d use the creator tools, Baarsma said, “I probably won’t bother using the custom tools, but that’s because the game is great as is. But I’m sure someone out there would love that option.”

Audio Trip arrives on the Oculus Quest on May 7th. Developer Kinemotik Studios has confirmed cross-buy support, meaning those who’ve already purchased the title on Rift will receive the Quest version free-of-charge upon its release.

Those looking for a killer workout in VR may also be interested in Supernatural on Oculus Quest. The fitness-focused platform uses a unique subscription-based model to deliver daily workouts conducted by professional trainers throughout a series of impressive 3D environments.

XR Immersive Enterprise 2020 Goes Digital

The show must go on…line: XR Immersive Enterprise 2020 goes Digital

The impact of COVID-19 is being felt across every sector, not least in events where the ban on public gatherings has made it temporarily impossible to hold crucial industry meets in person.

However, thanks to its wide network of speakers and dynamic approach, XR Immersive Enterprise is pleased to announce that it will be going fully online on May 5th to deliver three days’ worth of market-leading content free and direct to viewers’ homes.

Not only will virtual attendees have access to more than 40 industry-leading speakers but networkers need not miss out, with interactive sessions, a digital exhibition with more than 20 solution providers and a one-to-one meetings service to foster new partnerships in a rapidly-evolving marketplace.

Online events like XR Immersive Enterprise are essential because COVID-19 hasn’t just disrupted the events landscape; it looks set to also dramatically transform the XR industry. A renewed focus on home entertainment during lockdown periods is driving interest in virtual reality, while institutions that would normally welcome visitors are maintaining interest through virtual tours. There are also distinct advantages when deploying XR technologies in enterprise, as a supplement to in-person activities across several sectors including construction, insurance and pharma.

Then there are the distinct challenges to be met. Companies are understandably examining spend during these challenging times. As a still relatively new technology use case, XR is having to work even harder to demonstrate its value.

That value comes from the growing network of content creators, hardware manufacturers and connectivity providers who are working together to deliver ever more engaging and immersive experiences for users. Events such as XR Immersive Enterprise are critical to building those networks and establishing strong, profitable partnerships for future development.

To find out why Microsoft described the industry representation as “impressive” while Accenture referred to speakers as “AAA quality”, or learn what speakers from Novartis, Deutsche Telecom and Rolls Royce can reveal about their latest XR strategies, check out the website, or sign up to attend – for free – here.
