This three handled wassail mug holds over a pint of liquid and is well sized for sharing mulled cider with friends at wassailing time.
It is decorated with apple trees laden with red apples with windfalls underneath against a background of blue sky and green grass.
The word Wassail is from the Old Norse "Ves Heil" which means Be Hale or Be Well and it is a drink of hot mulled cider drunk traditionally as an integral part of wassailing.
Wassailing is a Medieval Christmastide drinking ritual intended to ensure a good cider apple harvest the following year.
There are many traditional songs and dances to celebrate this ritual.
The mug is thrown in terracotta clay and hand painted with coloured slips. I have used the technique of sgraffito (scratching through the top layer of slip to reveal the red clay beneath) to create the trunk and branches and I have used sponge to give the effect of leaves. The apples are painted on.
The handles are hand pulled and comfortable to hold.
It is finished in a food safe clear glaze and is dishwasher proof.
