This little jug would be suitable for milk or cream for tea or a posy of flowers. The individually hand painted design gives an impression of meadow flowers against a background colour of turquoise and has the addition of a tiny blue tit perching on the handle.
We are lucky enough to have seen many blue tit families being produced in our bird box with a camera linked to our TV. From initial nest making through egg laying and brooding, to hatching, feeding, growing and fledging we have been able to witness the fascinating development of these chirpy and lively little birds. I was inspired to add them to my jug handles when I saw a whole family of newly fledged young ones appealing for food from their parents just outside our window.
I paint my pottery with coloured slips which I mix myself from ball clay, metal oxides and ceramic stains . As well as regular sable paintbrushes I use primitive brushes which I make from splitting hazel twigs (often chewing them to achieve finer filaments!) and also use flower and seed heads to apply the design.
This little jug would make an unusual gift for a bird watcher or garden lover or just to keep for yourself!
Decorated with coloured slips and finished in a food safe clear glaze.
All my coloured slips (liquid clay) are applied manually, with a brush, and so variations in depth of colour will occur and occasionally reveal the the rich terracotta of the clay body beneath.
